As many of you know, this is a very stressful time in my life.  Some of you have received private emails from me on what is going on. Let me just tell you ….LOTS!  Lots of ill family members and other very stressful events.

Two nights in a row I woke up at 1 a.m. thinking it was morning. I became fearful that I was going to have or already had and “elevated” mood.  One night I took leftover tablet of  Zyprexa. The next night I took a left-over tablet of Lithium.

Yesterday I saw my holistic MD so that we could nip any “mania” in the bud.

Here is my patient plan:

  • 5-HTP 50 or 100 mg. Take at bedtime, on empty stomach (Although at this time I may take much more.)
  • Discontinue L-Tyrosine (Can be energizing.)
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids 1,000 mg 3 x day
  • Magnesium 400 mg 2 x day
  • Balance B-50 (may be energizing at this time)
  • Discontinue most vitamins at this time as they may be energizing.
  • L-Glutamine 1-2 teaspoons in drinks x day.
  • GABA 500 SL or PO as needed for anxiety
  • Sleep Essentials (Swanson’s blend) for sleep…but can take during day for anxiety
  • Melatonin
  • Taurine 500 mg 1-2  2-3 x day.
  • TMG 500 mg 1-2 2-3 x day.
  • Emergency prescription for Lithium in case I need it.

Key SL-sublingual (under tongue) PO per os (by mouth) mg – milligrams.


Your supplements have arrived.My box of supplements arrived yesterday. I use Swanson’s Vitamins because because my M.D. recommended them as reliable AND inexpensive.

Of course if you are lucky enough to have prescription coverage supplements are not covered. You have to pay for them out of pocket. For me this is totally worth every penny. In some ways when I say “lucky enough, ” I really mean “unlucky.” I am sure that my ex-husband’s excellent health insurance plan is what started me on my roller coaster of meds and madness. 

This box of freedom cost me $153.00. Swanson’s says that I saved a total of $248.40 off the retail prices.

I am expecting these to last two or three months for two people. 

I also ordered some treats. Like Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and a couple boxes of tea.

Some people are threatening to regulate the supplement industry. I have mixed feelings about it. I certainty don’t want to see Big Pharma get their hands on it.

I like to encourage local businesses. Sometimes if I don’t plan ahead I will purchase some supplements at the co-op, a major drug store chain or an independently run supplement store. I really like to purchase something at the independent store to encourage them.

Recently I promised you I would post a list of the supplements I take.

At night I make up a cocktail of supplements in two little little sherbet bowls one for myself and one for my husband. I think hubby feels loved when I tell him, “Take your supplements.

Here it is:

5-HTP 50-100 mg

EPA/DHA (fish oil or omega 3 fatty acid)

Vitamin B-6 100 mg

Vitamin B-12 lozenge 100 mcg

Vitamin C 500 – 2,000 mg

Vitamin E 400 ui


Magnesium 400-800 mg

L-Glutamine 500 mg

Taurine 500 mg

GABA 500 mg (as needed for anxiety up to three a day. We take one per night.)

N-Acetyl Cysteine 900 mg

Melatonin 3 mg (or Sleep Essentials as needed)

I just placed an order with Swanson Health Products.

This is just what I am currently taking. I am not saying that you should or should not take what I take. I just thought you might be curious. I have been stable and pharmaceutical-free for two years now. At my worst point in my mental health journey I took a cocktail of pharmaceuticals. In the past eight years I have been prescribed and took: Depakote, Klonipin, Imipramine, Valium, Neurontin, Risperidal, Zyprexa. During the past 20 years, I have taken other pharmecuticals for mental health that are not listed above.
